Welcome to the Friday#

This week in The Sizzle: It’s true – England cricketers should not be allowed access to Twitter and baby boomers continue to multiply 60 years on. In the Fri up we take a look at Bliar’s book launch through Brandwatch. In The Sauce, Armando Iannucci offers his hilarious stance on the Blair/Brown saga and the bankers explain via autotune.

Tech-team news:

Going live this weekend, we have two major enhancements to Brandwatch:

  • Minimising scrollbars will make our dashboard much easier to use
  • It will be possible to process mentions in the mention popup. This includes categorising, tagging, starring, deleting, workflowing, adding notes, and marking the mention as ‘processed’.

The rise of Bliar

So , the press has had an excellent week with the launch of Tony Blair’s autobiography ‘A Journey’ – in fact we’ve all had a bit of fun with it. “Tony Blair: ‘threatened’ to leave Gordon Brown locked in toilet’ shrieked the Telegraph while the Mail announced that he had ‘Devalued the monarchy and cheapened himself’ in a ‘I’m not angry I’m just disappointed’ kind of way. Although we are according to The Guardian ‘Disgusted with Blair’, in the few  days since it’s launch, his book has broken records to become Waterstones’ fastest selling autobiography ever.
If you take a look at the mentions of Blair and his book, there are more than 14k in the last week with the peak, unsurprisingly around A Journey’s September 1st launch.

While the sentiment analysis does not show any strong feeling against the book since much of it is reported news,  another element in this has been the rise of the moniker Bliar over the last month.

Taking Bliar into the equation and  re-evaluating the sentiment looking at individual mentions and the graph below, we see how Bliar has been adopted, not just as a negative pointer towards the book but also used as a term of abuse for a liar of any description – as in:

“George…I am SHOCKED! you live in London and you made up a story? do you know Tony Bliar?”

The negative sentiment is clear and rising as the book reaches launch date on September 1st. We thought he’d gone, but it appears Bliar is definitely hanging around for a while.
