Champions League Final
It’s been a while since we talked football in the Friday# but if the biggest soccer showdown of 2011 isn’t a worthy excuse, I’m not sure what is. OK, so there has been a lot of focus on a certain social media tsunami
which may have got in the way of our usual football focus – but with Brandwatch, we’re sticking to the beautiful game rather than the beautiful big brother contestant.
For this data, we’ve purely focused on Twitter and the tweets surrounding the Champions League and in particular the final, therefore filtering out most of the Ryan Giggs chat (except for a little speculation as to whether he would be in the final squad).
Firstly lets line up the teams:

So Barcelona has had a consistently higher volume on Twitter but the chat surrounding Man Utd accelerates as speculations grows as to the final line-up. This morning, however Barca appears to regain the upper hand with regards to Twitter buzz.
Now lets look at the top talked about players:
When looking for the top spot – Barcelona wins again. Despite Ryan Giggs’ notoriety this week, people’s eagerness to stick to chat surrounding the game is too strong and Barcelona’s Messi emerges as the most talked about player. That said – football is a game of 11 men and as a group, it is the Man Utd players who easily dominate the wordcloud.
Can Messi win it for Barcelona in more than just social media football? We await Saturday’s big game to find out.
