The Fri-Up
French Toast
We haven’t looked at football for a while in the Friday# – so while we wait on the take aways from this week’s CES, it seemed remiss not to toast two of our most loved players in the news this week.
Two unlikely occurances in the world of French Football, neatly summed up on Twitter by BBC Presenter Jeremy Vine: “Cantona wants to be the next president of France. Oh yeah, and Thierry Henry is going to play for Arsenal again and score the winner on his debut.”
Of the two national and international heroes, who will steal the social media limelight? Both events which caused the chat would have been thought equally stunning in their unliklihood until this week.
Being Brandwatch – we decided that the two French icons should square-up. This time their pitch is larger than usual 110 yds: the WHOLE WORLD of social media.
Fig 1. Volume for Cantona vs Henry from 6th – 13th Jan 2011
So we see in the volume stakes, there is no comparison. Cantona wins hands down this week. It may be that his bid to unseat Nicolas Sarkozy was more astounding and therefore more comment worthy, but is he ACTUALLY the most popular man in the race?
Only one way to find out: Sentiment.
Fig 2. Sentiment for Cantona Vs Henry from 6th – 13th Jan 2011
And its a red card for Cantona as Henry wins the fans’ hearts – as well as achieving the goal (in both senses) which launched him into social media hot topics this week. And I didnt’ even need to filter the data to female only posts!
