The Fri-Up
Eurozone
Wherever you are in the world, you can’t have escaped the woes of the Eurozone this week. Last night in Brussels, as this morning’s news reports tell, us David Cameron spectacularly attempted to block change on an EU treaty apparently causing the EU to “Suffer the worst split in history”. Obviously, this has made us less popular with our European cousins, but how significant are we to the phrase “Eurozone”, since by definition, currency divides anyway?
Fig 1. Wordcloud to show phrases near to Eurozone
The wordcloud* does show, that until midnight yesterday, the UK and Cameron weren’t mentioned by news, blogs, forums or social media in conjunction with the Eurozone in anywhere close to the volume of that of Merkel and Sarkozy.
(*The query did not include mentions of EU but specifically Eurozone).
It won’t come as any surprise though, that the downtrodden Brits can always laugh at themselves in the face of adversity. The top ten tweeters on the Eurozone topic for the last week (in English but worldwide) include two of our finest comedians:
