Here are a list of FAQs that should answer most of your questions about Brandwatch, what it does and how it works.

If you’d like to know about something we haven’t covered here, please get in touch through contact@brandwatch.com.

1) What is Brandwatch?

Brandwatch is one of the world’s leading tools for monitoring, analysing and utilising social media conversations.

It is a paid-subscription software, and the platform is accessed through a web browser.

2) What is Brandwatch used for?

Brandwatch can be used for a number of purposes: research, customer service, reputation management, marketing and sales.

Brands and agencies around the world use Brandwatch for these purposes.

3) How does Brandwatch work?

There are 3 steps:

  1. We gather up all the discussions from across the web 24/7 in 19 languages
  2. We process the data, stripping out spam and duplicates. We then use Natural Language Processing to find common topics and our cutting edge sentiment analysis systems attempt to determine what’s positive, neutral or negative.
  3. You cut and slice the data in the dashboard, depending on what you need.

4) How do I get access to Brandwatch?

Please fill out the form or call our team on +44 1273 234 290.

5) Is training and support offered?

All Brandwatch subscriptions are assigned to an Account Manager who provides ongoing phone and email support. Initial training is free but we offer advanced training for a cost as well. We also have a short series of online tutorials and a comprehensive written guide to Brandwatch is available from within the app.

We also have a technical support team that is staffed by Brandwatch developers, directly contactable by phone or email. There are always at least two developers whose primary task for the day is to provide technical support to Brandwatch customers.

Emails sent to the technical support team are automatically entered into a ticket tracker and are responded to within four hours.

6) Are there different applications?

No, there is only one Brandwatch application. When you subscribe with us you get full access to it. It is web-based so you can access it from anywhere.

7) Are there different account options?

Yes, we offer a range of options that cover most requirements. Please see the pricing page for details.

8) How much are extra logins?

We offer unlimited user logins to any client at no extra charge. The account administrator can add users themselves.

9) How often is the system updated?

Continuously: new functions are added to Brandwatch roughly every 2 weeks, often developed in response to client needs.

You don’t pay for the additional functionality and Brandwatch will be updated without you needing to do anything.

10) Does Brandwatch have an API?

Our own user interface is built on top of the Brandwatch API, which is available to all subscribers.

You can thus access all the data about your brand through this API at no extra cost, as well as create new brands. We can provide you with documentation.

11) Does Brandwatch provide consulting services?

Each client gets an Account Manager as part of the subscription. We also provide charged services for:

  1. Data validation (checking mentions, cleaning them, categorising them and altering sentiment manually)
  2. Query definition advice and ongoing management
  3. Bespoke reports
  4. Use of API for custom reporting and data analysis

12) How does Brandwatch’s sentiment analysis work?

We have several sentiment analysis machines that are trained on databases of mentions that have been manually assigned a sentiment value by humans. By seeing what humans classify as positive/negative/neutral, the machine can apply this knowledge to new data.

Because language means different things in different industries and also changes over time, we offer industry-specific systems (across all 19 languages) that are trained to understand contextual language and also updated to stay current.

13) How many sites does Brandwatch visit?

  • Millions of sources/feeds from blogs, forums, news and other sites: ~42m as of December 2011, growing by 2.5M per month.
  • PLUS Twitter and Facebook (for which we don’t use feeds but their API)

If we’re missing a site you want to crawl, we can add it within minutes. It’s an automated process – you just give us the URL and we will add it to the system. Customers can upload lists of sites to cover too. New sites apply to all projects/brands.

14) How often does Brandwatch visit sites?

On average we visit sites 3 times a day. Important sites are visited more often; every 5 or 30 minutes.

For Twitter we have a direct stream of their content so tweets typically come through within seconds or minutes.

15) What kind of content does Brandwatch index?

We index all text content (blog, forums, etc) as well as images and videos using their descriptions.

16) Which social networking sites do you cover?

Twitter, Google Buzz, Google+, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and many others.

17) Which languages does Brandwatch cover?

We support English plus 18 other languages including Chinese (Simplified and Traditional).

Each language has between 100Ks and millions of sources.

We add languages based on customer demand. There can be a fee for adding a new language, it usually can be done within a couple of months. We are in the process of adding Arabic and Japanese.

18) Which countries does Brandwatch cover?

We’re not limited by country – Brandwatch will pick up any mention for a particular language, regardless of its location.

Our system records the location of the page too, allowing filtering by location in the query or in the application.

19) Google says there are XX,XXX,XXX results…

These numbers are inaccurate – they include several orders of magnitude of duplicates. We also aim to remove all kinds of spam. We focus on providing results of quality, not quantity.

Also, check the date range; Google’s default is all dates. Change it to last week/month and go to the last page of results for a better idea of the real volume.

20) How much of my data can Brandwatch store?

When you create a new query, we return data up to the beginning of the previous month or up to 10k mentions (whichever comes first). From then on we keep all the data up to 6 months back.

We can go back further to retrieve up to 2 years data, but we may charge for this.

21) Can I engage straight from Brandwatch?

Brandwatch allows you to reply to Twitter mentions, and to publish mentions/comments to Twitter and Facebook, including posting bit.ly links. Internally, you can use workflow to share engagement across a team.

22) Can I administrate my account?

Each client is given one or more client administrator accounts, where they can create and manage user accounts. Users can create their own projects and queries.

23) Does Brandwatch have alerts?

Yes you can create any number of alerts. Alerts are fully-customisable as you specify a query and any combination of filters (mozRank, location, etc). Alert emails are sent ‘as it happens’ or once a day, week, etc.

They can also be sent to multiple email addresses, even to people without a Brandwatch login.

24) Does Brandwatch offer white labels?

Yes, for a fee: many of our clients have white labelled version of our user interface, with their own logo and colour scheme.
