Finding Relevant Data: the Most Important Part of a Monitoring Tool?

Over the years, dozens of social media monitoring tools have been launched, each one of them with different specialties and varied pricing, which can make choosing the right platform all the more confusing.

For an in-depth look at the report this blog post discusses, you can download it for free here.

One aspect that is often overlooked when selecting a vendor is the importance of a custom search functionality that sets the criteria for which social mentions to collect.

For most brands there are hundreds of interesting mentions every day, but as we all know, the internet is also full of bogus websites with spam links, duplicates and worthless automated content. Searching for relevant mentions, whether it’s about a brand, a product or a more general topic, can often be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Here’s our most recent guide  explaining how you the best practices for building a good query.

It’s not only us that is so fixated by queries though.

DragonSearch is a well-known search engine marketing consultancy with offices in the heart of Kingston, New York City and Hudson Valley region.

Businesses in a wide range of industries partner with DragonSearch for strategic planning and execution of their social media marketing through search engine optimization, community management and pay-per-click advertising.

After last year’s post on finding the ultimate tool of choice (Brandwatch was the winner, of course), DragonSearch decided to analyze the importance of the Boolean search strings in social media monitoring platforms.

We’re delighted to announce that we were selected as the leading example for sophisticated query searches, with our platform allowing users to find the most relevant results for their needs.

Although we do offer a structured query-creation feature for simple queries, Brandwatch is one of the only tools available that allows for complex search criteria with a full suite of powerful operators to perform searches with.

Take a peek at the comprehensive set of operators available in Brandwatch here.

The agency’s report details how searches are built in different ways across a sample of tools and how important they are to effective social media monitoring.

The paper also highlights how most tools provide additional filtering capability to make the analysis of the results more accurate. Defining a query properly means you can drill down to exactly what you’re looking for, therefore saving you time and money by not having to weed through irrelevant results later on.

Amazingly thorough piece of work. Takes the mystery out of boolean!! A must read (study) if you need clarification & instruction on how best to use the custom search functionality of social monitoring tools.

The advanced search boolean operator that the Brandwatch tool features helps make the social media monitoring process so much more streamlined which helps save time and ensures you are not missing any opportunities.

Brilliant. Glad you liked the report!

Thanks, I agree! Before reaching a conclusion based on the volume of mentions about a brand/product/search topic, it’s important to think about ambiguity, promotional results, spam and other repeated content that should be filtered out. Searching for MAC alone returns over 800k mentions in the past week, as it obviously includes all mentions of the makeup brand, Apple PCs, waterproof raincoats and anything else associated with the word. Using our Boolean operators should make these results much more relevant.

Great post, great white paper, but more importantly great tool! The tool comparison is spot on, and Brandwatch provides the most comprehensive scope of social media monitoring. The depth of queries based on the variety of Boolean searches makes that all possible!

  • Jannette Pazer

Thank you for featuring my white paper! I think there’s a lot more to social media monitoring than meets the eye, and understanding how to properly construct an effective boolean query string that encompasses all the variations and excludes the irrelevant matches goes a long way in making the best use of a monitoring tool.

  • Iris Vermeren

Thanks for your comment Jannette :) We couldn’t agree more!

  • Iris Vermeren

Thanks Evan, glad you’re enjoying using Brandwatch!

ASAP Systems is better than Wasp, Redbeam and Intellitrak because unlike all of these inventory and asset tracking systems, none of them are nearly as configurable, easy-to-use, and customizable like ASAP Systems is. ASAP Systems Passport and BarCloud Inventory asset tracking systems makes it easy-to-use with the powerful customization of fields by deleting, creating, and changing tabs the way you want so that it is flexible with any business operation. Customizable reports also allows you to choose exactly what you want to report on so you have complete control. You can literally change anything in the system with complete control!”

The ability to write super advanced search queries that sorts the data from the noise is what really sets Brandwatch apart from its competition and the number one reason we’re using it at the SCRM Cloud.
