Interview: Professor Mike McGuirk on How Brandwatch For Students is Used in His Classroom

There’s no doubt that Brandwatch is a great place to learn.
I started my first real job here and have developed my skills in multiple areas, including becoming a qualified journalist.
Three years in, I was interested to find out how other new and soon-to-be graduates were settling into their roles at the company.
Here’s what they had to say.
“From hearing about Brandwatch at the Sussex University Careers fair, as well as coming across their website when job hunting, I decided to apply for an internship in hopes of kicking off the future I wanted my degree to lead to.
“With the company’s size and my shy personality, it wouldn’t have been difficult for me to feel intimidated, however this was minimized due to everyone’s effort to welcome me.
“For nine months I did two days of work a week at the company so though I wasn’t fully integrated due to my university life I was fortunate to meet all the teams and discover how they all interlink.
“As several months passed, I fell in love with the company’s culture and my team so I couldn’t resist applying for the role of Graduate Java Developer as I was curious to see if I could apply the knowledge I obtained from my degree. Currently, one month into the job, I spend most of my time in the data partnerships team building my skills in back-end coding.”
“I didn’t know an office could be so vibrant and unique”
“What surprised me about the interview was how personal it was. I know other companies who just ask generic questions however Brandwatch was different in a way that made me felt they knew me properly and I was sure of what was required in the job. Although I applied to other companies, the job in Brandwatch was the most compelling and their smooth, quick recruitment service resulted in me being hired within a month.”

“Now, 5 months in, I learn and develop my experience in java along with my football skills in the company as every week Brandwatch has a game of football. Being part of this community of diverse people all working to tackle (no pun intended) problems head on inspires me and helped me confirm that this is what I want to do full-time after university.”
“When anyone finishes their degree their hope afterwards is to find a job that actually utilizes the education they’ve worked on, which is why I was captivated by the position of graduate data scientist.”
