It’s time to change things up

On March 20, nine days after WHO declared the pandemic, we released our first Covid-19 Daily Bulletin. The turnaround from idea to delivery was about two days – it was an intense challenge that brought together a bunch of people from different teams – but it worked. More than 3,000 people now receive our bulletins every day, and we’re continuously pleasantly surprised by the open rate!

In these 100 bulletins we’ve covered pretty much every topic relating to how the world has taken on Covid-19. We’ve looked at optimism and anxiety levels, video game obsessions and travel trends, and the uptake of many weird and wonderful activities across the world.

With our 100th edition, we’re introducing a change to our bulletins. From next week, they’ll be going out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, instead of every weekday. This gives us more time to put into the content for each bulletin, while giving our long-suffering design team some days off from making the charts.

For the subscribers who have been with us for a while, you’ll know our bulletins can tend towards the negative side of life – this is a global crisis after all. But today, as it’s a Friday and we’re celebrating 100 bulletins, we thought we’d dig up some positive stats.

Achievements of the online world

We wanted to find out how much the online world had achieved during the pandemic, to show that it takes a lot more than the widespread outbreak of a deadly virus for humanity to give up on the little things.

Here’s a rundown of what we’ve done since the pandemic was declared:

  • 12,034,144 fundraiser links were shared
  • 10,581825 dog pictures and 8,112,190 cat pictures were posted
  • 830,644 people posted about baking bread, cakes, and pastries
  • 332,719 posts were made about completing an exercise activity
  • 149,354 people talked about learning a new language
  • 112,880 birdwatching photos were shared
  • 40,312 people proudly posted about their homebrewed beer or wine
  • 25,121 people submitted pieces of their creative writing to Reddit for the world to read

While this is only a small number of the amazing things people have done over the last few months, it’s good to remind ourselves that not everything has shuddered to a halt because of Covid-19.

Finally, we’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our readers. We’ve loved putting the bulletins together so far, and we’re looking forward to the many more to come.
