Brandwatch Bulletin #57: Crowdsourcing a Hangover Cure

Will you give them a go?

We’ve reached the end of another week and that means a lot of you will be grabbing a drink in a few hours. Although, you might change your mind after reading today’s bulletin.

Let’s get to it.

We never learn

After pride comes the fall, just as after “one too many” drinks comes the hangover. Ever since the first beer was brewed, we’ve been afflicting ourselves with headaches, dehydration, and nausea. Nevertheless, we keep marching on (to the bar).

With the weekend just a few hours away, today we’re looking at hangovers, how we talk about them online, and the internet’s top cure.

To collect our data, we used Brandwatch Consumer Research to find Twitter and Reddit posts where people said they were hungover over the years.

Let’s start with the days of the week.

Saturdays and Sundays are painful days for many. We can also see how, after people recover from some Sunday recreation on a Monday, hangover mentions creep up throughout the week.

Hangovers may be painful, but clearly it doesn’t take long for people to risk another one.

The most hungover day of the year

Now let’s zoom out and take stock of the last 12 months. First, hangover levels have remained fairly steady, falling just 3% compared to the same period before that. Whether we’ve drunk less, or been less interested in talking about hangovers, we can’t say for sure.

But even with limited social opportunities, it’s still easy to see when we’re most hungover.

New Year’s Day hangovers dwarf any other day of the year, and we can’t say we’re surprised. Following that was November 1 (the day after Halloween), and then July 5 as Americans attempted to recover from Independence Day celebrations.

Outside of these events, and excluding January, we found that August had the most hangover mentions. With warmer weather meaning drinks in parks and beaches and on vacation, this isn’t a shock.

Now onto fixing those hangovers.

Hair of the dog?

To help you the next time you’re regretting the night before, we picked up mentions of “hangover cure” and then used our topic cloud to find out which fixes got the most mentions.

It’s pretty mixed, but with a powerful blender it’ll be a cinch to turn this list into a hangover super-cure smoothie. Sundays will never be the same again.

What should we cover next?
