2013 Social Media Stats Put into Perspective Marketing

By Chelsea Varney on August 22nd 2013

Have you ever taken a social media stat and put it in perspective by comparing it to things in the ‘real world’ around you? No? Well here at Brandwatch we like to take data and make it into something fun, so we’ve compiled some, er, interesting data comparisons from across the web about social media.

For example, did you know that Myspace has lost 43 million users since its peak in 2008, which is the same amount of overweight dogs in America!?

Here are a few more weird and wonderful social media statistics and their offline counterparts:

  • There are 83 million fake profiles on Facebook, that is nearly the same figure in pounds that Real Madrid paid for Cristiano Ronaldo (shocking)!
  • On average, every users spends 17 minutes each day on LinkedIn. Added up over a year, you could have instead used that time to watch Back to the Future 53 times. We’ll let you decide which is more worthwhile.

  • 100 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute. It would take you roughly four days to watch a minute’s worth of uploads.

  • There are 1 billion likes on Instagram everyday. If you had a dollar for each of those likes, in one day you’d have enough money to spend $1000 a day for 2740 years before you became bankrupt.
  • Facebook will account for 13% of worldwide mobile ad revenue in 2013. That is the same percentage of people who fake calls to avoid speaking to someone they dislike.

Finding these statistics can sometimes be painstakingly slow, as there are often multiple articles with conflicting figures and, as social media changes so quickly, it’s not always easy to know which are the most up-to-date numbers.

We love this little social media table (credit to Gary Hayes for this) which shows all the most interesting social statistics from Facebook likes to music tracks downloaded, in pseudo real-time.
